Ielpn Chapter 9, why does Timothy and Phillip tear vines down from the north end of the island?

Timothy and Phillip gather vines from the north end of the island so Timothy can weave them into a long rope. He strings the rope from the campsite down to the signal fire pile on the beach so Phillip can use it to guide himself to the signal fire pile if he hears a plane when Timothy is not around.
