No matter how many time I read this book, I always reflect on the sense of hopelessness in the final chapter. Holden remains hospitalized and closed off. He appreciates his sister's visits, and he even admits to missing his friends. I find it alarming, however, that he continues to warn the reader against trusting anyone..... that he still sees a sharing his feelings as something dangerous. It is also concerning that he remains ambiguous about his own future. In essence, he seems to have learned nothing from his experiences or his therapy.
