Jim Qwilleran from The Cat Who Turned on and Off is a retired news journalist from 'down below' which is what the people in Maine call those who live in the other states located 'below' them on the map. He has retired to Maine with two siamese cats named Koko and YumYum. He is quite the typical curmudgeon, a recovering alcoholic, whose unlucky fortune at love has at least left him lucky monetarily. He has come into a great deal of money from a relative that he never knew. While he was working as a reporter down below, he credits himself with having helped solve a number of criminal cases with the police. He turns this same ability to good use in his new town.
