Why does montresor the narrator want revenge

We are actually never really sure why Montresor wants revenge. He has been nursing a grudge against his friend Fortunato, who has committed several unnamed offenses against him, and has been coldly planning his revenge. Like many of Poe's protagonists, Montresor is an unreliable narrator.
