The man who is in conflict with Montressor is Fortunato, another well known man in the city. He is a bit of a buffoon, or seems to be at first. They are both enjoying Carnivale and Fortunato has had a little too much to drink, which works into Montressor's plans to lure him into his wine cellars to kill him.
