How is it ironic that the Pardoner told a moral story?

The Pardoner forgives people's sins for a price, but is a charlatan, collecting profits for himself over the fees for the Church for papal indulgences. The Pardoner carries a bag of fake relics, and appears shifty. He is representative of the corruption in the medieval Church.
