What is a conflict in chapter 1 through 11

In Chapter Three, the "Volksdeutsche" was formed. This Nazi group put Mrs. Gruber and Harry, who joined the group, in direct conflict with Riva's family. Harry claimed he could protect Riva and her family from the Nazis persecution of the Jews. He would not, however, be there...... he was sent to the German front. In this chapter we see the beginning of the conflict between friends and neighbors. Harry was attacked for his relationship with Riva and accused of being a spy. Their friendship was annihilated by the hatred that surrounded them. Harry gave in for his "Fatherland".
