comment on Language and Meaning

The language in the novel is very stilted and proper, demonstrating that all of the characters are intelligent and professional. During Andrew’s meeting with Henrik, Henrik notes that the people who have been dying around Andrew make Hendrik nervous. Andrew responds: “Of course, absolutely, it should do” (298). Andrew does not end his sentence informally with “it should” but instead completes it with “it should do” meaning it should make Hendrik nervous. All the characters speak the same, meaning there are no inflections or speech patterns that differentiate them.
