Uncle Ted is Karim's uncle. He is unhappy in his job and is dominated by his wife. Haroon's Buddhism releases Ted from what he feels are his obligations and he seeks out happiness. He finds it in a business partnership with Eva. He helps her to refurbish houses and becomes one of the few people in the book to find happiness and their place in the world by the end of the book.
