Who else in Chapter 6 is broken and bonded besides Matt and his dad?

Matt discovers Mr. Ray once had a promising but brief basketball career until he suffered a broken knee. Mr. Ray says he got through because of his girlfriend, Ella. They married and he followed his father into the funeral business. When Ella was 29, she fell on some ice and died. Mr. Ray calls is his “pain room,” and says he knew Matt “would get it” (106).
