Why was Hans Hubermann asked to stay behind while the rest of his troop was sent in to battle in France during WWI?

When one of the sergeants asked for a soldier with good handwriting to stay behind during a particular mission, Erik Vandenberg volunteered Hans. During the mission, all of Hans' troop members were killed, and he forever credited Erik with saving his life.
