One symbol in the novel is Valancy's rosebush, a gift she destroys out of anger and frustration after her diagnosis. The rosebush represents life, which becomes evident when Valancy returns to visit her family after her diagnosis is proven false, and after she is happily married to Barney. When she returns home.... the rosebush is in full bloom.
