Who is Jiya's Father from The Big Wave and what is their importance?

Jiya's father is a fisherman. He sends Jiya up the hill before the big wave.... an order that saves Jiya's life. Jiya's father, however, is swept out to sea and killed when the big wave strikes the beach.
