What is Kino's experience when the volcano starts to become active?

One day, fires rage in the earth, steam rising from the mouth of the volcano. Kino points this out to his father who anxiously keeps watch all night, and in the morning, cinders and ash fall from the volcano making the ground hot under Kino's feet.
