What does Kino's father tell him about what the gods do to test men?

Kino's father warns, "Sea and earth and sky- if they work together against man, it will be dangerous indeed for us" (page 17). He explains that sometimes the gods leave man to see how well he can take care of himself, and man must be able, though fear makes him weak.
