How do the villagers treat the beach for many years after the big wave?

No one lives on the beach for many years, though there is never another wave like the big wave. The surviving fishermen move to new shores, telling themselves no beach is as good as the old one. Kino and Jiya rarely visit the deserted beach, swimming in the ocean on the other side of the hill, but Jiya looks at the empty beach every morning as if searching for something.
