It is within this chapter that Florent begins to form his plan for revenge. Monsieur Lebigre's back room provides the perfect environment for Florent to voice his displeasure in public. Conversely, Monsieur Lebigre's provides the other characters an opportunity to take advantage of the naïve former schoolteacher. Florent is so blinded by his political ire that he does not take the time to distinguish between the scrupulous members of the group and those with ulterior motives. In fact, Florent is the only individual whose commitment to the cause of revolution is untainted by some type of self-interest.
