Thoughts of the injustice of his imprisonment at Cayenne prompt Florent to return to politics. He decides that he must do something to counteract the excess that seems to enfold him. Florent begins to spend his evenings at Monsieur Lebigre's with Gavard, Lacaille, Charvet, Clémence, Logre and Robine to discuss the possibility of an insurrection.
