A noticeable difference in Nellie's attitude that takes place when she arrives in Russia is that she likes Moscow very much, far more so than Frankfurt. This is a significant difference from her apathetic view while Frank was courting her. The Reid family house in Moscow is halfway destroyed by fire in the riots. The water that the firemen use immediately freezes. This ruins virtually everything not burned. One item they salvage is Mrs. Reid's Bechstein piano. Frank and Nellie lease a home and Nellie promptly sets about putting it in order with a positive attitude. She includes the Bechstein.
