What does the reader learn of Frank's background in the opening chapter?

In the opening chapter the reader learns several things about Frank. He was born in Moscow, but both his parents were English. His father imported and assembled printing machinery. In the course of his business dealings his father had acquired a fairly small printing operation. This business is all that Frank retains.
