Frank's primary goal is in seeing that the investigation into the break-in does not escalate into a major security matter. He first sends word to Tvyordov advising him to stay home, and that his pay would not be docked. When the police arrive, he downplays the fact that the watchman heard gunshots. Frank can see they do not take Selwyn's comment that a book is missing very seriously. He then offers them a small bribe to ensure the issue goes away. Frank subsequently goes to calm the two workers.
