After the children have been brought into him to say goodnight following his arrival home late one evening, Frank sends all the servants to bed. He then stays up to wait for Kuriatin, Charlie, and Bernov. Kuriatin had taken Charlie on an outing in his Wolseley car. Bernov was sent along to act as an interpreter. Kuriatin had suggested they go to the Merchants' Church, about twelve miles outside of Moscow.
