Duke Conrad is concerned for the state of the kingdom of Regia. He funds Cabarrus, and betrays his king and nephew in the hopes that it will be better for the kingdom at large. In this way, Conrad sets the whole story into motion. When his nephew tells him that he will be put to death, Conrad realizes that his nephew might be a great king after all.
