The beak of the Finch
Darwin noted that the Galapagos finches had a graded series of beak sizes and shapes. He then predicted these species were modified from one original mainland species which were a result of natural selection. Natural selection is caused by the inheritance of traits, competition between individuals, and variation of traits.
