Who is the Hook-Handed Man in The Bad Beginning by Lemony Snicket?

Like many of Snicket's characters, the Hook-Handed Man is known only as just that.... the Hook-Handed Man. He has no given name, and we are never apprised what happened to his own hands. The children are terrified of the Hook-Handed Man.
