One major theme in the novel is that of immaturity. Edna is immature in that she flouts convention, lacks the necessary qualities to be a mother, and humiliates her husband without a second thought.
Robert Lebrun also represents this immaturity in the way he treats women without a care for their reputations, their husbands, or even his own reputation in society.
