What is the author's style in The Autumn of the Patriarch by Gabriel Garcia Marquez?

The novel is originally written in Spanish, but seems to be put into a lively translation into English by Gregory Rabassa. The most difficult thing about the novel is the language and sentence structure. The language is a sort of stream-of-consciousness of a series of narrators. There is no conventional grammar, and sentences can continue for a page or more.
