Malcom X's mother tries to make sure that he sees the world for what it is and to make him mentally/emotionally tough. Having suffered at the hands of others all of her life (she, herself, was the product of a white man raping a black woman) she imparts all of her bitterness to her children. This leads her to institute very strict rules about what can and cannot be done in her household.
