In Chapter Four, the author relates the events of Gertrude Stein's childhood. Ironically, as Stein is the author of the book, this section may be perceived as autobiographical. The author foreshadows Gertrude Stein's life in Paris in her descriptions of Gertrude's childhood spent there.
