What does Kate see when she, Martin, and the boys leave the Orchid District in Chapter 10?

When Kate gets outside the resort, she sees a small road that joins the main highway. Abandoned cars fill the freeway as far as she can see. Doors stand open and the streets are strewn with garments, rotten food, and objects that Kate doesn’t recognize.
