Who is Lord Roke in the novel, The Amber Spyglass?

Lord Roke is one of Lord Asriel's generals. He is the commander of the Gallivespian spies, and he rides a hawk. The humans have the utmost respect for him, especially since he is very proud, and so have added ledges at eye-height so Roke can land his hawk and speak to people eye-to-eye.
