What is the main conflict in The Ambassadors by Henry James?

The main conflict in the novel is man vs self, as Strether heads to Europe in order to collect a friend, Chad Newsome, and bring him back to the states. Going to Europe, and finding Chad isn't a problem..... but Strether, like Chad, is hesitant about returning.
