Birchville is the central location of the novel. A small town in Alabama, it is the place where most of the book's action takes place. Leia's great grandfather founded the town decades ago, and her family has lived there ever since. Currently, Birchie is the only Birch left in Birchville. The town is beautiful and idyllic and full of fond memories for Leia, who spent every summer in Birchville when she was a child. But the town is also full of hatred, bigotry, and segregation.
