What does Ellis Birch represent in the novel, The Almost Sisters?

Ellis Birch symbolizes the Second South and the pervasiveness of racism. He was a respected man, and his daughter had no idea of his prejudices until she witnessed him raping if Vina. Leia kills him, placing herself in opposition to these ideals.
