In 1987, Tawana Brawley was a 15 year old African American girl who lived in Wappinger, New York. She accused six white men of raping her and some were members of the local police. In 1988, a grand jury concluded that Brawley had not been raped and she made up the attack, and a New York prosecutor subsequently brought a lawsuit against her.
