According to Williams, the second attitude of whites was that a prejudiced society is better than one that is violent. A tension is produced when whites allow racist impulses to avoid being hurt and African Americans feel obligated to justify themselves for normal activities. A tension is thereby produced when the African American is accused of a crime.
