According to Part III, Chapter 7, when Williams entered an apartment building, a white woman stormed out because there were 'bums' in the lobby. The bum turned out to be an elderly African American woman who was smoking a cigarette. When Williams told the woman that, she complained about being mugged and shot at and ran away.
