At the beginning of the novel, readers realize that Tara and her father, Urbano, do not have a good relationship with each other. By calling her a spoiled brat and blaming her for her mother's death, Urbano spurs Tara's departure, first to Connor's place and then to Alaska.

Urbano is tough, but he loved his wife and he loves Tara. Unaware that Tara was raped, he takes her to get boxing lessons. Once he finds out about the rape, he understands her actions and begs her to come back. He does not want to lose his daughter because he loves her
