As Tara spends more time with Betteryear, she continues to observe him, and thorugh him, she learns to be one with nature. When Betteryear sees that Tara has a gun to kill bears (her view of conquering nature), he shows her another use for the gun. It also involves killing, but it is killing in the natural hierarchy of nature. Instead of killing an animal when one has intruded on the animal's domain, one kills to obtain nourishment. He teaches Tara how to eat off the land and how to give thanks for what it provides.
