What do Tara and her friends do in order to save money in the novel, The Alaskan Laundry?

Tara and her friends try to live in the forest to save money. The forest, however, is dangerous, shared by Outlaws, and outside of civilization. Living in the forest proves to be overwhelming for Tara and her friends, and she goes leaves to stay with a friend.
