Why does Gonzalo choose not to have his damaged leg fixed in the novel, The Aguero Sisters?

Gonzalo takes pride in his own outrageousness and in his injury: "Gonzalo could have fixed his leg years ago, but he prefers it damaged, the pretext it gives him to boast of his valor."
