How have Herr Koenig's circumstances changed in the war's aftermath in the novel, The Aftermath?

Herr Koenig is a supposed former headmaster reduced by the war to the role of tutor to a British officer’s son. As Edmund’s tutor, he shows that he is a “man of excellent all-round ability” (132). He is only waiting to be cleaned in order to return to his former position.
