Lorenzo compares his marriage to Teresa to the experience of drowning in order to express the feeling that the relationship is threatening to stifle his sense of individuality. According to Teresa, Lorenzo says that, with her, he "always felt he was sinking into a well full of black, muddy, stinking water; he was gradually losing himself, bit by bit."
