Twain's portrayal of Judge Thatcher is positive. He is described as a well respected man, who is proud but fair. He also looks out for Tom and Huck's interests at the end of the novel.

Mr. Dobbins is an unlikeable character, who is disliked by his students. He is described as cruel and abusive toward his students.

Mr. Sprague, the minister, is formal, business like, and longwinded. He takes his job seriously.
