The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

There are consequences for every action we take in life. Is telling truth when it matters most worth the consequences it may bring?

After the trial in Chapter 23, Tom and Huck are very scared that Injun Joe will come
after them. The narrator reveals that, “Daily Muff Potter’s gratitude made Tom glad he had spoken;
but nightly he wished he has sealed up his tongue” (Twain 139).

This question calls for your opinion, there is no right or wrong answer. In my opinion, Tom did the right thing. Had he allowed Muff Potter to take the blame for a murder he didn't commit, Tom wouldn't have been able to cope with the guilt and regret. Knowing that he did the right thing, however, doesn't take away the fear of the consequences.
