Abu 'Inan was the son of Abu l'Hasan. He successfully challenged his father for the seat of power in Morocco shortly after Ibn Battuta returned from his travels. Abu 'Inan constructed a fortified city next to the old city of Fez, where he encouraged the propagation of Islamic scholarship. Abu 'Inan commissioned Ibn Juzayy to write down the recollections of Ibn Battuta's journeys, and he is thus responsible for the publication of the book.
