It is of course ironic that the Colonel would believe that stealing from someone is helpful to him. But more than this, it is ironic because the Colonel believes that his theft of Martin's words is what allows Martín to have a voice in Argentina. In a further irony, the Colonel juxtaposes this explanation with his own complaint that Buenos Aires is "ripping off" the estancias (121).
