China Iron recounts the terrifying stories about Indian raids that the older gauchos in the settlement told her when she was a child; it is clear that the gauchos view the Indians as animals. Ironically, they view the whites as weaker than themselves, and credit their own mixed ancestry for their strength and supposed superiority to both Indians and whites.
