In his final conversation with Liz, the Colonel tells her that the Indians are easily distracted by shiny trinkets and that they are destined to live outside of time, "like animals." He contrasts this with people like himself--he believes that he is destined to bring progress to Argentina by spreading the "seeds" of tomorrow across the "virgin land" (143).
