The Colonel has almost unlimited contempt for the gauchos. He concedes that they are good soldiers, but otherwise he thinks that they are useless, having not inherited the finer qualities of either race they are descended from. He believes that an agricultural existence with better material circumstances is obviously a superior way of life for them but that without the intervention of people like himself, they would be incapable of obtaining it for themselves. He also accuses them of having no moral sense at all.
